A Brief History of Memory Trainin g
Memory Training systems can be traced back to antiquity. Over the centuries
there have been many documented cases of truly extraordinary feats of
memory. A nineteenth century American, Daniel McCartney, could recall, when
in his fifties, what he had been doing on every single day of his life since
early childhood. For any given date he could give the weather conditions
during the day, and tell what he had eaten for breakfast, lunch and supper
that day !
There have been many recorded cases of people memorising entire books,
including the page numbers and punctuation marks. The Italian Antonio de
Marco Magliabechi is reputed to have memorised the entire contents of the
library of the Grand Duke of Tuscany.
The chess champion Paul Morphy could remember every single move of every
game he had played throughout his career, including those that he had played
blindfold .
A Mathematics Professor at the University of Edinburgh, A.C. Aitken, could
easily remember the first thousand decimal places of the value of Pi - both
forward and backward .
Many stage performers make a career out of their trained memories, and
perform amazing memory feats daily, such as remembering the names of an
audience of several hundred people after hearing their names just once.
Memory Training is one of the most rewarding self-improvement courses you
can ever embark upon, because an efficient memory can help you in so many
other areas of self-improvement - learning foreign languages, studying, and
so on.
